Crazy news has broken out of Spain.
FC Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has today been slapped with a huge fine and a one-year prison term for fraud,
The fine stands at €815,000.
The punishments were handed out in a Spanish court after the 31-year Argentine confessed to tax-related offenses.
The former West Ham and Liverpool player failed to declare earnings in 2011 and 2012. Moreover, he allegedly attempted to conceal earnings from his image rights by using companies he owns abroad.
Mascherano’s lawyer, David Aineto, has petitioned the court for the automatic suspension of the one-year prison sentence.
In addition the Barcelona star is looking to lower the fine to €21,000.
Sport report that the prosecution has accepted the appeal, and the judge is likely to issue a new verdict in the coming days.
Marca have added that the proceedings last just ten minutes.
