Safe hands: Pantilimon joins the Hornets in a £500,000 deal
Watford have signed 6ft 8in goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon from Sunderland in a shock £500,000 deal.
Pantilimon joins the Vicarage Road payroll on a three-and-a-half year contract after slipping down the pecking order at the Stadium of Light.
The former Manchester City keeper, who was also wanted by Spanish club Espanyol, started the season as the Black Cats' first choice.
But he had not played for Sam Allardyce's men since their 3-1 defeat at Chelsea on December 19 and was third-choice behind Vito Mannone.
Big Sam has gambled by selling the Romanian international to a potential relegation rival, after Watford's fourth consecutive Premier League defeat at Swansea on Monday night.

And by washing his hands of Pantilimon, who has made 52 appearances in the top flight, Allardyce is also giving England Under 21 star Jordan Pickford – who only made his Premier League debut at Tottenham last weekend – a huge vote of confidence.
Pantilimon, 28, will provide competition for Hornets No.1 Heurelho Gomes and he said: “It was the best option for me. I like the manager, I like the players and I have made a good choice.
“I know Gomes well from playing against him before. He is a nice guy but I will fight for my position.”
Flores said: “We don't need a goalkeeper to replace Heurelho because he is an amazing keeper – but we are looking for cover for players who are playing every time.”
A brief statement on the Black Cats' official website confirmed the move, saying: “Sunderland AFC would like to thank Costel and wish him the very best for the future at his new club."

Daniel Sturridge: Striker has not played since December 6

West Ham are ready to make a shock move for Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge with manager Jurgen Klopp ready to sell the player, according to reports.
Sturridge has endured a disastrous spell on the sidelines over the past two seasons, and has been hit by numerous injuries since his move to Anfield in January 2013.
The 26-year-old has only featured six times this season, and after Liverpool managerJurgen Klopp said he had “no chance” of featuring in Wednesday’s FA Cup third round replay against Exeter, there is a sense that the German may be running out of patience with the striker.
Now reports in the Brentwood Gazette suggest that West Ham are looking to offer the former Chelsea striker a route out of Liverpool as they prepare an £18million bid.
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic is desperate to sign a striker in the January transfer window, and has also expressed interest in Juventus’ Simone Zaza.
But now Sturridge has emerged as a target for the Hammers as they bid to break into the top four and claim Champions League football next season.
Bilic’s side are currently sixth in the Premier League, four points behind fourth placed Spurs.

Nigerian Villagers: Cameroon Troops Are Killing Civilians

NIGERIAN VILLAGERS: CAMEROON TROOPS ARE KILLING CIVILIANS

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) -- Cameroonian troops pursuing Boko Haram fired rocket-propelled grenades indiscriminately that killed a family of four, then shot and killed two other civilians, trapped Nigerian villagers said Tuesday.
It's the latest of several reports accusing the military of neighboring Cameroon of killing scores of Nigerian civilians and razing villages in an apparent attempt to create a no-go zone along the border. Cameroon's government has denied previous similar charges, which come amid rising tensions between Nigeria and its neighbors over the Islamic uprising that has spilled over Nigeria's borders.
Muhammad Abba, deputy commander of a civilian self-defense group, said relatives telephoned him Tuesday to describe how one grenade exploded through the grass roof of a hut and killed a family of four in the northeastern village Ashigashiya on Monday.
Then Cameroonian soldiers dragged away two elderly men and shot them on the outskirts of the village, Abba said.
He said villagers have been trapped for weeks between hostile Cameroonian troops and an area where Boko Haram is operating.
There was no way to independently verify his report.
The first such story came from refugees who said Cameroonian soldiers on Nov. 30 killed about 150 people, stole livestock and set huts ablaze along a 150-kilometer (95-mile) stretch of the border. Hundreds of refugees have arrived with similar reports. Nigerian government officials have not responded to requests for comment, instead warning local press to be "patriotic." Cameroon said its troops were deployed with Nigerian soldiers in the fight against Boko Haram.
The raids began days after Nigeria refused requests from neighboring countries to evacuate border villages and create a buffer zone where troops could shoot anything that moved to prevent incursions by Boko Haram, according to a diplomat familiar with negotiations.
Nigerian troops also have been accused of atrocities in the six-year uprising that has killed 20,000 people!

Jonjo Shelvey Having Newcastle United Medical Ahead of Move

Jonjo Shelvey is currently undergoing a medical check with Newcastle United ahead of completing a move to St. James' Park from Swansea City.

Newcastle have agreed a fee with Swansea for the former Liverpool midfielder and Magpies boss Steve McClaren is keen to quickly tie up Shelvey's capture.

Matters are moving along quickly on the north east and according to the Press Association, Shelvey is currently undergoing his medical with Newcastle.

Shelvey joined Swansea from Liverpool in 2013, with the Welsh giants forking out a fee of £5m to sign the midfielder.

He signed a new four-year contract with Swansea last year, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2019, but now looks set to be on the move just six months later.

The 23-year-old will link up with a Newcastle side currently battling against relegation from the Premier League and Magpies boss McClaren will hope Shelvey can give his team new impetus in the middle of the park.

Shelvey has won six caps for England and may still harbour hopes of forcing his way into Roy Hodgson's squad for Euro 2016 this coming summer.
